Mesa County Valley School District No. 51

Parents should always have a role in their children’s education – make your voice heard!
There is a School Board election for the Mesa County Valley School District No. 51 on November 7, 2023. Voters can vote in person or drop off their ballot at the designated Ballot Drop Box locations.
Mesa County Valley School District No. 51 residents will have the opportunity to vote for one candidate for each of the two School Board positions.

For District A, voters will choose between CynDee Skalla, Jose Luis Chávez, and Jessica Hearns.

For District B, voters will choose between Barbara Evanson and Cindy Enos-Martinez.

District A

Skalla is a mother, grandmother, and teacher. 

 

Skalla is endorsed by the Grand Junction Area Chamber of Commerce. 

 

Skalla wants to attract the best and brightest for all classrooms and improve academic achievement. 

 

Skalla wants to listen and work with the community to promote safe schools.

Chávez is a father, grandfather, and retired probation officer. 

 

Chávez is a community organizer and “minority advocate” and is involved “in the breaking down of cultural barriers.” 

 

He strives to build solutions between people with different points of view.

 

Chávez was endorsed by the Mesa Valley Education Association, a union.

Hearns is a teacher. 

 

Hearns wants to ensure there is effective communication with parents, teachers, students, and community members. 

 

Hearns believes that schools should provide an environment where students have the freedom to explore, learn, and express themselves. 

 

Hearns is endorsed by a Planning Board member and Select Board candidate.

Evanson is a mother, a Marine Corps veteran, and former security officer for D51 schools. 

 

Evanson wants to invest money in classrooms and look for ways to reduce administration spending. 

 

Evanson wants to defend parental rights and keep schools safe. Evanson is endorsed by Stephen Varela, the 3rd Congressional District Colorado State Board of Education representative.

Enos-Martinez supports providing housing for teachers and says the district should partner with other entities to make that happen. 

 

Enos-Martinez believes schools should be accepting of all students and make them feel comfortable with the position they are in. 

 

Enos-Martinez said she is worried about declining enrollment due to homeschools and charter schools. 

 

Enos-Martinez is endorsed by the Mesa Valley Education Association.
